You will be put under a no-show if you miss the AA flight without cancelling your ticket/ informing the Airline. After avoiding a no-show, you can get yourself rebooked on the next available plane for your route. You may also receive a same-day standby/ possible refund (if the rebooking option is not chosen).
The American Airlines missed flight policy domestic slightly differs from the international one. The primary variation lies in the check-in deadline (60 minutes for international/ 45 minutes for domestic). You will also witness stricter standby/ rebooking rules on international flights. Other general policies are the same for both routes.
The Airline will rebook you on the next available flight. You will not be charged a penny. It happens when the delay is involuntary (caused by the Airline itself). This condition applies when your missed connecting flight is also with American Airlines. However, if your missed connection was with the other Airline, you will not receive complimentary rebooking/ refund.
There is no common no-show fee with American Airlines. The Airline will forfeit the ticket value in all cases. It is true for all cases of non-refundable bookings. You can save yourself from this by contacting the Airline immediately.
American allows all passengers to stand by for earlier flights on the same day for free. It can be done either online or through a representative (up to 45 minutes prior to departure). Standby for higher elite statuses (Platinum Pro/ Exec Platinum/ ConciergeKey) is possible up to 15 minutes prior to departure. This rule does not always guarantee a seat.
